Spiced Apples
SERVES 8 PREP 10 Min COOK 10 MIN

2 cups water 
4 cups granulated sugar
1/3 cup distilled white vinegar
4 cinnamon sticks
5 cloves
3 cloves nutmeg
4 pounds firm, tart apples—peeled, cored, (optional: slice the apples)

1. Combine water, sugar, vinegar, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in a large saucepan.

2. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

3. Add apples; cook 10 minutes.

4. Serve hot or cold.

5. Serve whole or with meat dishes such as ham, duck, lamb.
